How to Read an Economic Calendar
如何解读财经日历
How to Read an Economic Calendar is Kitalpha Course 4: 6 lessons, about 2 hours, free. Every lesson is anchored to a live Kitalpha record (U.S. calendar release records, the impact methodology page, the indicator pages and the FOMC brief). General educational information only.
What every field on a Kitalpha calendar row records: the agency, the release date and time with its zone, the reference period behind the figure, the state, the impact tier computed from stored Treasury reactions, and the line explaining why no consensus column appears. Six lessons on live U.S. release records, ending with release times across four time zones.
What you will be able to do
- Read every field on a Kitalpha calendar row — title, indicator, agency, release date and time with its zone, reference period, state and impact tier — and say what each one records.
- Distinguish the reference period a release describes from the date it is published, and locate an indicator's latest and previous prints on its indicator page rather than on the calendar row.
- Interpret an impact tier as a statistic of stored Treasury reactions on the indicator's past release days, read the score in basis points and the measure it came from, and explain why a row can carry no rating.
- Explain why a Kitalpha row carries no consensus or expectation figure, read the no-consensus line printed in its place, and tell an attributed market-implied line in a central-bank brief apart from a survey consensus.
- Compare one concept, consumer prices, as measured by two agencies — the BLS's consumer price index and the BEA's PCE price index — across their two release schedules on the calendar.
- Convert a release time from the agency's local zone to New York, London, Brisbane and Beijing clocks, including weeks when daylight-saving changes fall on different dates in different countries.
Audience: Anyone who has opened an economic calendar and felt lost. Course 3 (how an economy is measured) comes first; no other background is assumed.

Mastery task
The course ends with a transfer task: 6 items on the newest Kitalpha record you have not seen, pass mark 80%. On a fail, the missed items map to their lessons and a review of those lessons is scheduled before a retake. A completion page is issued only on mastery. Go to the mastery task →
