One instant, four clocks: release times across time zones
One concept: a release instant across time zones
Why it matters
The newest CPI release on Kitalpha’s calendar is timed at 08:30 GMT-4 in New York. The same row, read in Brisbane, shows 22:30 GMT+10; read in Beijing, 20:30 GMT+8. Nothing happened three times. One release happened once, and three clocks described the moment. A reader who takes “08:30” as a universal fact misses releases by half a day, and a reader who memorises “fourteen hours ahead” is wrong for half the year. Why the same instant reads differently, and why the gaps between cities change, is the idea here.
The concept
A release is an instant: the agency publishes at a moment, and the moment is the same everywhere. What differs is the clock reading, because a clock reading is an instant plus a zone’s offset from universal time. U.S. agencies state their schedules in Eastern Time, the zone of New York. London sits five hours ahead of New York for most of the year, Brisbane fourteen or fifteen, Beijing twelve or thirteen. A row that shows the instant in the reader’s own zone, with the zone’s abbreviation beside it, has done that arithmetic; the abbreviation is there so the reader knows which arithmetic was done.
The offsets are not fixed, and that is the part most readers underestimate. Daylight saving moves a zone’s offset by an hour for part of the year, and zones decide independently whether and when to do it. New York shifts in March and November. London shifts in late March and late October, on different dates from New York, so for a few weeks each spring and autumn the two are four hours apart rather than five. Brisbane does not shift at all, since Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so the New York–Brisbane gap is fourteen hours during U.S. daylight saving and fifteen otherwise. Beijing does not shift either; its gap from New York is twelve hours in the U.S. summer and thirteen in the U.S. winter, while its gap from Brisbane is two hours all year.
Dates move too. An early-morning release in New York is an evening release on the same calendar date in Brisbane and Beijing, but an afternoon release in New York, such as a central-bank decision at two o’clock, lands after midnight in Brisbane and is dated the next day there. A reader in the eastern hemisphere who searches the calendar for a Wednesday decision may find it filed under Thursday. The row’s date and time in the chosen zone are both translations of the one instant, and both can differ from the agency’s.
The practical consequence is a habit rather than a formula. Instead of adding a remembered number of hours, read the row in the zone you are in and check the abbreviation, because the row was computed from the instant on that date and daylight saving on both ends is already in it. The steps below read each zone’s offset from universal time at that instant, then take the differences: how far London and Brisbane were ahead of New York at the moment of release. Every figure comes from the row’s instant, with daylight saving on that date included.

Read the first four lines as the offsets in force on the day of the release, not as constants; two of them, New York’s and London’s, take a different value for part of the year. The fifth and sixth lines are the gaps a reader in London or Brisbane needed on that day to translate the New York time. If the release had fallen a few months earlier or later, the sixth line would differ by an hour with no change to the release itself, which is why the row does the translation rather than the reader.

Now a scheduled instant rather than a past one: the next FOMC decision, due 2026-10-28 at 14:00 GMT-4 in New York. New York’s and Beijing’s offsets at that instant are given. Complete the last step: how many hours Beijing is ahead of New York on that day.
